With the holidays over, we’re back to work and the hours are feeling longer as the day gets shorter. The happiest time of year is over and we can definitely feel the stress. Josey Miketa, our head Massage and Body Works Therapist at the American Tobacco Campus location has the perfect solution to our problems. Here’s what Josey can tell us about stress:
As a massage therapist and former mortgage broker, I’ve seen the damage stress can do first hand — both for my clients and for myself.
Entering into 2021, by now we’ve caught up with friends on Zoom, enjoyed online Netflix movie nights, and have had socially-distanced get-togethers. One other thing that’s been the same for many of our friends and family–we’re exhausted. The fast-paced, work-from-home, 60-hour work weeks, where there’s barely any time to eat lunch, let alone think about self care, can get really tiring. That kind of pressure impacts your life in more ways than you realize. Without a means to unwind, the stress and tension you’re feeling starts showing up on your body, through:
- Fatigue
- Pain
- Illness
- Injury
Unfortunately, it gets worse the longer you ignore it. Giving yourself the time to relax can mean the difference between being happy and productive, and not being available for any of life’s challenges.
Luckily, solutions for our daily stresses are not out of reach. At-home stress relief can be found in various forms. For some, relaxation comes through stretching and deep breathing exercises, for others it can be through knitting or listening to music. But sometimes, our bodies need more healing than what can be found at home. When you’ve stretched to the limit and have knitted more scarves than you can wear, massage therapy is the best solution to help heal and re-energize the body.
The benefits of massage can make a huge difference in your quality of life. Not only does a massage make you feel good, it helps connect your mind and body and helps relieve pain. A massage therapy session also reduces cortisol levels, which affect your immune system and natural ability to respond to stress, and can improve your quality of sleep, so you can reap the benefits long after you leave the spa.
