Ceramides: The Ultimate Dry Skin

At Bella Trio, winter is one of our favorite times of the year. Although the sun sets sooner and the weather gets colder, the abundance of holidays really make it a heartwarming season. We get to put on cheerful music, string up lights, and bring out our yearly Wishing Treeornaments with Ronald McDonald House of Charity. Through all these fun and games, we start to notice the drier air causing dry, flaky skin, sometimes to the point where people experience cracked nasal areas, and so it’s important to be proactive and address these issues before they become major. Facials are to be scheduled and products to be purchased, but how do we remedy this? Enter ceramides.

What Are Ceramides?

Ceramides are a powerhouse ingredient in skincare because of how it maintains the health of our skin. They are present in the top layer of our skin and are, essentially, the glue that holds our skin cells together. Because ceramides belong in the lipid, or oil, family, they work to seal moisture into the skin to prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and maintain our skin’s natural moisturizing factors (NMF). So when our skin starts getting dry and flaky in winter, adding ceramides into your skincare routine can make the biggest difference for a happy, smooth face.

Who Can Use Ceramides?

Ceramides are naturally present in our bodies and can benefit everyone, though it’s definitely more beneficial for those with normal to dry skin conditions and sensitive skin types. The healing and moisture-preserving properties align more with what’s needed for drier skin types. Not only that, but preserving moisture in the skin is also great for preventative aging. Oily skin can also benefit from ceramides, since sometimes excessive oil can be a result of overworked skin.

How To Use Ceramides

Ceramides work well when paired with other hydrating products, like serums, to keep the skin well moisturized and prevent TEWL. We love the Skinceuticals Hydrating B5 Gel because of how well hyaluronic acid works to keep the skin plump and hydrated. Because hyaluronic acid holds nearly 1000x its weight in water, when topped off with ceramide-rich Skinceuticals Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2, it makes for a decadent combination that results in supple skin. The Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2 is a best-selling corrective cream that works to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, promote volume in the skin, and improve elasticity. Not only does it improve the signs of aging, it protects the skin from harsh, cold temperatures. The luxurious feel of this anti-aging cream will have you scooping every jar dry.

When remedying sensitive skin, we love the Bioelements Barrier Fix Daily Hydrator because of the added anti-inflammatory ingredients. This is the perfect addition to your skincare routine if you’re experiencing flakiness and newfound redness. The ceramides work to protect your skin barrier and create a smooth canvas, while Chinese silver ear mushroom comforts and calms inflammation. The Barrier Fix Daily Hydrator alleviates any irritation from dry skin and helps repair and prevent damage. The lightweight texture of this cream absorbs quickly, yet packs a moisturizing punch.

For intense cases of dry skin, like with cracking crevices, the big guy is needed. Bioelements Recovery Serum is a rich, silky serum suitable for the most overworked skin. This is the perfect solution for Kleenex-ridden noses, cracked hands, or any areas of skin that need extra TLC. This also makes an exceptional moisturizer post-peel, as it supports barrier function, and can even be used as a makeup primer to smooth out skin.

Routine Suggestions

After using a soothing toner like Bioelements Soothing Reset Mist, add two drops of Skinceuticals Hydrating B5 Gel to your skin and gently pat with your finger tips. Follow up your routine with a ceramide cream, like Skinceuticals Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2 or Bioelements Barrier Fix Daily Hydrator to seal in the serum and finish with your favorite sunscreen, if daytime. For heightened skin, Bioelements Recovery Serum can be used as a last-step spot-treatment or all over, as needed.
